Irish Rose Square

Irish Rose Square free crochet square pattern.

Irish Rose Square 1

Materials: A limp worsted weight yarn, such as Caron Wintuk, or any of the

“soft” yarns. You can use the traditional one-color white, or you can use 3

colors…color A = flower color, color B = leaf color, color C = main color

Crochet hook size G

Gauge: Rounds 1-2 = 2 1/2”

Finished size: About 7 1/2”

Directions are for one color. Changes for three color variation is included in

brackets at the end of each row.

Ch 4; join with a sl st to form ring [If using 3 colors, use color A]

Round 1: Ch 4 to count as the first dc and the first ch 1, (dc in ring , ch 1) 7

times; join with a sl st in the 3rd ch of the beginning ch 4.

Round 2: (Ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch 1 sp, ch 1, sl st in the next dc) 8 times:

join with a sl st in the joining sl st.

Round 3: Ch 1, from the back, sl st around the post of the first dc on round

1, directly below; ch 5 to count as the first dc and the first ch 2, (bpdc

around the next dc on round 1, ch 2) 7 times; join with a sl st in the 3rd ch

of the beginning ch 5.

Round 4: (Ch 1, 5 dc in the next ch 2 sp, ch 1, sl st in the next dc) 8 times:

join with a sl st in the joining sl st. [If using 3 colors, fasten off color A]

Round 5: Ch 1, from the back, sl st around the post of the first dc on round

3, directly below; *ch 6 to count as the first dc and the first ch 3, (bpdc

around the next dc on round 3, ch 3) 7 times; join with a sl st in the 3rd ch

of the beginning ch 5.* [If using 3 colors, attach color B, with a sl st from

the back, around the post of any dc on round 3, then work from * to *]

Round 6: (Leaves) (2 sc in the next ch 3 sp, ch 4, sc in the 2nd ch from

hook, hdc in the next ch, dc in the next ch, sc in the same ch 3 sp; ch 6, sc

in the 2nd ch from hook, hdc in the next ch, dc in the next ch, trc in the

next ch, dc in the next ch, sc in the same ch 3 sp; ch 4, sc in the 2nd ch

from hook, hdc in the next ch, dc in the next ch, 2 sc in the same ch 3 sp; 3

sc in the next ch 3 sp) 4 times; join with a sl st to the first sc. [If using 3

colors, fasten off color B]

Round 7: Sc in the next sc, ** *(ch 3, working behind leaves, sc in the

next sc between leaves) 2 times, ch 3 sc in the next sc, (ch 3, skip next 2

sc, sc in the next sc) 2 times* Repeat from * to * 2 times, (ch 3, working

behind leaves, sc in the next sc between leaves) 2 times, ch 3 sc in the

next sc, ch 3, skip next 2 sc, sc in the next sc, ch 3; join with a sl st to the

first sc.** [If using 3 colors, attach color C with a sc in the next sc, then

work from ** to **.]

Round 8: Working behind leaves, sl st into the first ch 3 sp, ch 1, sc in the

same sp; ch 3, sc in the next ch 3 sp, ch 3, sc in the same sp for corner;

*(ch 3, sc in the next ch 3 sp) 5 times, ch 3, sc in the same sp for corner*

Repeat from * to * 2 times, (ch 3, sc in the next ch 3 sp) 3 times, ch 3; join

with a sl st to the first sc.

Round 9: Sl st into the first ch 3 sp, ch 1, sc in the same sp; ch 3, sc in the

next ch 3 sp, ch 3, sc in the same sp for corner; *ch 3, sc in the next ch 3

sp, (ch 3, insert hook through the sc at the tip of the next small leaf below,

then insert hook in the next ch 3 sp and complete sc, ch 3, sc in the next ch

3 sp) 2 times, ch 3, sc in the next ch 3 sp, ch 3, sc in the same sp for

corner, skip large leaf.* Repeat from * to * 2 times; (ch 3, sc in the next ch

3 sp, (ch 3, insert hook through the sc at the tip of the next small leaf

below, then insert hook in the next ch 3 sp and complete sc) 2 times, ch 3;

join with a sl st to the first sc.

Round 10: Sl st into the first ch 3 sp, ch 1, sc in the same sp; *ch 3, insert

hook through the sc at the tip of the next large leaf below, then insert hook

in the next ch 3 sp and complete sc, (ch 3, sc in the next ch 3 sp) 6 times*

Repeat from * to * 2 times; ch 3, insert hook through the sc at the tip of

the next large leaf below, then insert hook in the next ch 3 sp and complete

sc, (ch 3, sc in the next ch 3 sp) 5 times, ch 3; join with a sl st to the first

sc.

Round 11: Sl st into the first ch 3 sp, ch 1, sc in the same sp, (ch 3, sc in

the next ch 3 sp) 27 times, ch 3; join with a sl st to the first sc.

Round 12: Sl st into the first ch 3 sp, ch 1, sc in the same sp, ch 5, sc in

the same sp for corner, *(ch 3, sc in the next ch 3 sp) 7 times, ch 5, sc in

the same sp for corner* Repeat from * to * 2 times, (ch 3, sc in the next ch

3 sp) 6 times, ch 3; join with a sl st to the first sc. [If using 3 colors, fasten

off color C.]

Round 13: Sl st into the first ch 5 sp,** ch 3 to count as the first dc, work 6

more dc in the same sp, *sc in the next ch 3 sp, (5 dc in the next ch 3 sp,

sc in the next ch 3 sp) 3 times, 7 dc in the next ch 5 sp* Repeat from * to *

2 times, sc in the next ch 3 sp, (5 dc in the next ch 3 sp, sc in the next ch 3

sp) 3 times; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3.** [If using 3

colors, join color A with a sl st in any ch 5 sp and repeat from ** to **.

Fasten off color A.]

Round 14: Ch 1, from the back, sl st around the post of the first dc, **ch 2

to count as the first hdc, bphdc around each of the next 2 dc, bpdc around

the next dc, bphdc around each of the next 3 dc, *bpdc around the next sc,

(bphdc around the next dc, bpsc around each of the next 3 dc, bphdc

around the next dc, bpdc around the next sc) 3 times, bphdc around each of

the next 3 dc, bpdc around the next dc, bphdc around each of the next 3

dc* Repeat from * to * 2 times, (bphdc around the next dc, bpsc around

each of the next 3 dc, bphdc around the next dc, bpdc around the next sc) 3

times; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 2.** [If using 3 colors,

join color C from the back with a sl st around the post of the first dc of any

7 dc shell, then work from ** to **.]

Round 15: Ch 1, sc in the same st as joining, sc in each of the next 2 sc, 3

sc in the next sc for corner, (sc in each of the next 25 sc, 3 sc in the next sc

for corner) 3 times, sc in each of the next 22 sc; join with a sl st to the first

sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
