Formal Boot Bag

Laura Irwin used buttons and bobbles to decorate this sturdy bag. She began by knitting a rectangular base with the yarn doubled for extra thickness, then she picked up stitches around all four edges and worked the body of the bag to the top, using just a single strand of yarn. Along the way, she worked decreases to give the bag a graceful pouch shape. She added short tabs to the top of each side of attaching metal rings that secure the metal chain handle. To make a dense fabric that will keep its shape without an additional lining, Laura felted the bag in her washing machine. For added interest, she knitted a single stockinette-stitch panel that she decorated with bobbles and buttons and attached to the center of the bag front, base, and back.
