Beautiful Celtic cable knitting pattern, intricate and stunning!
Abbreviations:
k = knit
p = purl
c4f = (cable 4 front)- slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold at the front of the work, knit 2, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle.
c4b = (cable 4 back)- slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold at the back of the work, knit 2, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle.
cr3l = slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold at the front of the work, purl 1, then knit 2 from the cable needle.
cr3r = slip 1 stitch to a cable needle and hold at the back of the work, knit 2, then purl 1 from the cable needle.
cr4l = slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold at the front of the work, purl 2, then knit 2 from the cable needle.
cr4r = slip 2 stitch to a cable needle and hold at the back of the work, knit 2, then purl 2 from the cable needle.

Row 1 (RS): (p2, c4b, p2) x 3
Row 2 and every even row: knit all knit stitches and purl all purl stitches
Row 3: p1, cr3r, (cr4l, cr4r) x 2, cr3l, p1
Row 5: cr3r, p1, (p2, c4f, p2) x 2, p1, cr3l
Row 7: k2, p2, (cr4r, cr4l) x 2, p2, k2

(Note: It has been brought to my attention that I had included a row {Row 17: (p2, k4, p2) X 3} which is not necessary to the pattern, I knitted this a long time ago and cannot remember the reference book i pulled it out from, so I have decided to take that row 17 out. )

You could create your own scarf just by following this stitch with a garter or moss stitch border. Good luck!
Is something wrong with row 16? Is it supposed to be row 17 and row 16 is the same as row 2? Thank you! It looks beautiful so far.

For me in Row 17 is something wrong , well not really wrong but I think you confused the k and the p when writing down because (k2,p4,k2) x3 didn’t look right to me so I did (p2,k4,p2) X 3 instead and the cable is coming out just fine.

hey how many cast on stitches did you use for this pattern?
the panel itself contains 24 stitches, on either side I just added a few reverse stockinette to create a background, you can add as many as you like.
I’ve recently moved house and all my notebooks and reference books are in storage, could anyone out there help shed light on this? much appreciated!

I wrote earlier saying that there was still a problem with the pattern. Since then I have knitted it for the front of a sweater and I can confirm that it is definitely a 16 row pattern. There are other sites where you can check this. Row 17 should be removed. Thanks.

I made a pullover (I have finished sleeves and back) and now I’ll begin with the front of it and I decide to follow your pattern instead of the design of the model. I have a doubt with your post because I read 2 patterns. First, your explications and second one call “ROPES”. I see your blue sample and I see the white sample and I’m not able to see where is the difference. The explications are differents. Is it a problem of difficulty? Can you help me? Thank you a lot.
Is there a typo with abbreviations for the cr3l and cr3r? Shouldn’t they be the same amount of stiches on cable needle? So is it 1 or 2? Or is that right? Please let me know asap thanks.

this is perfect for two of the strips in the blanket i’m knitting out of super bulky yarn on 8mm needles. i’m doing 3 panels of 25 sts each (plus 2 purls on each side for background and 2 knits for sewing together), and 2 panels of 20 sts seed stitch. these will be the side panels and this ( https://www.knitting-bee.com/free-knitting-patterns/dishcloths/cable-in-a-diamond-knitting-pattern-panel ) will be the centre panel

Louise… the 2nd and all even-numbered (reverse-side) rows you work the stitches as set, purl the purls and knit the knits. Row 16 is the last row of the pattern repeat I thnk.
