Diagonal Knit Dishcloth

I love Grandmother’s Favorite bias-knit dishcloth, but sometimes would like a
little pizzazz to keep it interesting. Here’s my favorite variation.
Solid color, worsted weight cotton or linen and size 6 knitting needles, or size
to give a gauge of 4.5 sts per inch in stockinette stitch.

This design yields a simple, diagonal‑shaped dishcloth knit in garter stitch, growing wider with each row until it hits a peak, then decreasing back down — resulting in a flat, diamond‑like cloth rather than a square. The construction uses basic knit‑and‑increase and decrease methods (like yarn‑overs and knit‑togethers) rather than complicated stitch patterns, which makes it a good beginner‑friendly project. The diagonal shaping gives the cloth a subtle visual interest, and because it’s worked in cotton yarn, it’s functional: absorbent, quick to wash, and perfect for kitchen or bathroom use. It’s a practical, no‑frills knit cloth that’s both easy to make and useful to have around the house.
