Anniversary Afghan

A lovely anniversary afghan. A knitted cabled afghan pattern with cables and diamond texture. This textured panel grows from elegant increases, decreases, and cables, finishing with embroidered roses for a striking handmade heirloom. The fabric is dense, sculptural, and perfect for an afghan strip or full blanket.
Choose any worsted weight yarn you love. Cast on as many stitches as you want (the original uses 250+). The first five stitches of every row form a stable garter border.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn
  • Knitting needles: US 6 or 7
  • Tapestry needle for embroidery
  • Optional: double-point needle for cables

Special Stitches

Increase 1 (Inc 1):
Purl in the front of the stitch, then purl in the back of the same stitch (1 stitch increased).

Note:
The first 5 stitches of every row = garter stitch border. They are not part of the stitch pattern.

Finishing

Work two full repeats of the 31-row pattern.

Embroider roses:

  • Use green for stems and leaves.
  • Use two colors for petals (one for a woman, one for a man in the original version).
  • Add a dark red rose in the center of the afghan by working 5 rose motifs, then the red, then 5 more.
  • Stems are embroidered over a central knit stitch.
  • Each leaf extends off the stem.
  • Each petal uses three passes of thread for fullness.
  • Hide ends inside the stems by weaving into the embroidered lines.

PLEZE, PLEZE HELP! I’m not able to understand the Anniversary Afghan pattern. I’m lost on the very first row. I’ve got my five row border done, with 250 stitches on, but please start off row 1 for me. Do I begin every row with 5 knits and then another 5 for the pattern and then end with 5 more knits. Will so appreciate your help. Thanks – Dorothy
