This collection brings together some of the best free DK baby cardigan knitting patterns, including simple cardigans for newer knitters, top-down and seamless designs, classic raglan cardigans, textured knits, lace cardigans and cosy hooded styles.

In Australia and New Zealand, 8 ply yarn is generally the equivalent of DK weight, so I have included suitable 8 ply baby cardigan patterns too.

Why DK Yarn Works So Well for Baby Cardigans

DK sits neatly between fine baby yarns and heavier worsted or aran yarns.

That makes it particularly useful for baby cardigans. The resulting fabric can be warm without becoming excessively bulky, and DK is thick enough that a tiny cardigan doesn’t take forever to knit.

It’s also readily available in baby-friendly fibres including merino wool, cotton, acrylic and washable wool blends.

If you’re substituting a different DK yarn for the one specified in a pattern, don’t rely on the DK label alone. Knit a gauge swatch first. Different DK yarns can produce surprisingly different fabrics and finished measurements.

1. Besties Cardigan

A colourful little cardigan and a particularly good choice if you’re looking for an easier DK baby knit.

The body is worked from the bottom up, while the sleeves are picked up and worked from the top down. Contrast edging gives you plenty of opportunity to play with colour without having to tackle complicated colourwork.

Needles: 4 mm (US 6)
Skill level: Easy

2. Pure Peppermint Baby Cardigan

If your ideal baby cardigan involves very little sewing, Pure Peppermint is one to put near the top of your list.

This classic DK cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down with raglan shaping. Simple stockinette makes up most of the cardigan, while garter stitch creates neat edges at the hem, cuffs and button bands.

3. Classic Top-Down Baby Cardigan – Two Ways

Here’s a particularly useful pattern because you can knit essentially the same classic DK baby cardigan in two different styles.

Choose the solid stockinette version for a simple everyday cardigan, or knit the lace version for something more decorative.

Both versions are worked in one piece from the top down with raglan shaping, with the sleeves subsequently worked in the round.

6. Be Cool Coat

This one is for knitters who enjoy texture.

The DK-weight baby cardigan combines garter stitch, stockinette and slipped stitches to create a more interesting surface than a basic baby sweater.

The body is worked largely in one piece from the bottom up, with separately knitted sleeves joined to form the raglan.

7. Baby’s Hooded DK Coat

Sometimes you want something warmer than a little button-front cardigan.

This 8 ply hooded baby coat fits the bill. Remember that Australian 8 ply is generally equivalent to DK, making this pattern relevant if you’ve been searching specifically for a DK baby jacket with a hood.

The body is worked in one piece to the armholes before being divided for the fronts and back. Raglan sleeves and a separately knitted hood complete the cardigan.

8. Baby Wrap Cardigan

This sweet wrap-style cardigan is a little different from the standard button-front baby cardi.

It’s worked in DK-weight cotton with contrasting edging. The body is knitted in one piece, while the sleeves are knitted directly onto the armholes in the round.

Buttons and hidden press-stud fastenings secure the overlapping fronts.

My Picks by Skill Level

Newer knitters: Start with the Pure Peppermint Baby Cardigan or Besties Cardigan. Both keep the knitting relatively approachable while still producing a lovely finished garment.

Confident beginners: Try the Classic Top-Down Baby Cardigan or Hundreds Baby Cardigan if you’d like to practise top-down construction and raglan shaping.

Intermediate knitters: The Taylor Baby Cardigan, Left of Center Cardi, Be Cool Coat and Baby’s Hooded DK Coat offer more interesting texture, shaping or construction.

And if you’re knitting for a particular baby, start with size before style. The Baby & Toddler DK Cardigan and Taylor Cardigan offer especially useful size ranges, while Hundreds is specifically designed as a newborn cardigan.

What Is DK Yarn?

DK stands for double knitting and refers to a medium-light yarn weight.

You’ll commonly find DK baby patterns knitted on needles around 3.5–4.5 mm, although the correct needle size depends on the yarn, pattern and required gauge.

DK is generally:

  • heavier than 4 ply/fingering yarn
  • lighter than worsted or aran
  • approximately equivalent to Australian 8 ply

The most important measurement when substituting yarn isn’t simply the wording on the ball band—it’s gauge.

If the pattern requires 22 stitches over 10 cm and your chosen DK gives you 25 stitches, for example, your finished baby cardigan could come out considerably smaller than intended.

What Is the Best DK Yarn for a Baby Cardigan?

Look for a yarn that’s soft against delicate skin but also practical enough to withstand regular washing.

Good options include:

Superwash merino DK – soft, warm and easier to care for than traditional untreated wool.

Baby acrylic DK – affordable, washable and available in an enormous range of colours.

Cotton DK – breathable and particularly useful for warmer climates and spring or summer babies.

Wool/acrylic blends – combine some of wool’s warmth and elasticity with easier care.

Always check the yarn manufacturer’s washing instructions before knitting a gift. New parents may appreciate a cardigan that can go into the washing machine far more than one requiring elaborate hand washing.

How Much DK Yarn Do You Need for a Baby Cardigan?

It varies considerably according to the baby’s size, the cardigan’s length, stitch pattern and yarn.

A tiny newborn stockinette cardigan naturally needs much less yarn than a hooded toddler cardigan or heavily cabled design.

Rather than buying yarn based on a general estimate, check the metres or yards required by the individual pattern.

This is especially important when substituting yarn because two 50 g balls of DK don’t necessarily contain the same yardage.

Free DK Baby Cardigan Knitting Patterns: FAQs

Is DK yarn suitable for baby cardigans?

Yes. DK is one of the most versatile yarn weights for baby cardigans because it produces fabric that is warm without being excessively heavy. It’s particularly useful for everyday layering pieces.

Is 8 ply the same as DK yarn?

Generally, yes. In Australia and New Zealand, 8 ply is commonly treated as the equivalent of DK weight. Yarn classifications aren’t perfectly standardised, however, so always compare the pattern gauge with the yarn you’re planning to use.

What size needles do I need for a DK baby cardigan?

Many DK baby cardigan patterns use needles somewhere around 3.5–4.5 mm, but you should use whatever needle size allows you to achieve the pattern’s specified gauge.

Can beginners knit a DK baby cardigan?

Absolutely. Look for a pattern using simple stockinette or garter stitch and uncomplicated construction. A top-down raglan can also be surprisingly beginner-friendly because much of the cardigan is worked continuously and requires very little seaming.

Can I substitute another DK yarn?

Usually, but don’t substitute based solely on yarn weight. Compare fibre, yardage and gauge and knit a swatch before beginning. A cotton DK, merino DK and fluffy acrylic DK can behave very differently even when all three are labelled DK.

What is the easiest type of baby cardigan to knit?

A simple garter-stitch or stockinette cardigan with minimal shaping is usually easiest. Seamless top-down raglan cardigans are also useful for newer garment knitters because they eliminate much of the sewing required by traditionally constructed cardigans.

Is DK too thick for newborn knitting?

No. DK is commonly used for newborn cardigans, jackets, hats and other baby clothes. For very delicate garments or warmer weather you may prefer 4 ply, while DK is an excellent choice when you want a slightly warmer everyday cardigan.

Should baby cardigan yarn be machine washable?

It doesn’t have to be, but washable yarn can make the finished cardigan considerably more practical. Babies’ clothes need frequent washing, so check the yarn-care instructions before choosing your yarn.
