Construction Notes:
- This pattern is adapted from the Fuzzy Farm chicken, with shaping adjusted to create a smaller, rounder chick.
- The body is shaped using m1 increases on the purl side, along with decreases like k2tog and skpo, creating a soft, rounded silhouette.
- The chick is worked in rows, then folded and sewn together, with stuffing added for a firm but cuddly texture.
- Details like eyes are embroidered with French knots, and the beak and feet are added from felt, giving a three-dimensional charm.
- Optional variations include knitting in brown for a sparrow or grey with red felt for a robin.
Materials:
- 15–20 m (yards) of yellow yarn, plus a small amount of black yarn for eyes
- 3×3″ piece of orange felt and matching thread for beak and feet
- Stuffing
- Pair of straight knitting needles (1–2 sizes smaller than yarn recommendation to create a firm fabric)
- Tapestry needle and hand-sewing needle
Finished Size:
- Depends on yarn weight and needle choice. Using DK yarn on 3.25 mm needles yields an 8 cm long chick.
Special Techniques:
- M1 increase on the purl side: lift the yarn between stitches with your left-hand needle and purl into the front of the loop.
- Embroidery for eyes using French knots.
- Felt beak: can be made as an open diamond shape folded across the middle or a closed half-circle cone, stitched securely to the face.
This sweet little chick is a perfect spring decoration, gift, or quick knit project, and it’s ideal for experimenting with small-scale shaping and finishing techniques in your knitting.
