Assembly (Main Body)

Sew shoulder seams.

Hood

Pick up 112 stitches evenly along neckline.
Work straight in garter stitch for 32 cm.
Then, divide stitches in half (see schematic 14b) and shape the top of the hood as you would turn a heel on a sock.
Sew the top seam closed.

Sleeves

From the edge of section B–V, pick up 70 stitches.
Work 26 cm in garter stitch.
Bind off all stitches.

Sew sleeves to body, then close side and sleeve seams.
Edging: work 1 round of single crochet (sc) and then 1 round of reverse single crochet (crab stitch) along sleeve cuffs using hook size 4 mm.

Pockets

Refer to schematic (Fig. 14c).
Cast on 24 stitches.
Row 1: Knit all.
Row 2: Work as follows, placing stitch markers: 8 sts / 1 st / 9 sts / 1 st / 5 sts.
At the marked single stitches, increase 1 stitch on each side (make 1).
Knit yarn overs as twisted knit stitches to avoid holes.

At the same time, increase for side shaping 7 times, 1 stitch each, every 2nd row.
After 10 rows (5 increases each side of the center stitches), continue increasing every 4th row until you have 15 increases.
Work 6 rows straight.

Decrease:
Mirror the increases until 31 stitches remain.
Work straight for 32 rows, then bind off all stitches.

Knit the second pocket as a mirror image.
Crochet edges of both pockets with 1 row sc and 1 row crab stitch.
Fold flap to the right side and sew pocket so that its side aligns with the coat’s side seam.

Finishing

  • Crochet along bottom edge with 1 row sc.
  • Continue up the front bands and hood, working 6 rows of single crochet.
  • In the 5th row, create 3 buttonholes (chain spaces) spaced 14 cm apart.
  • Work a final edging round of crab stitch around the entire coat.
  • Sew buttons onto the front band and pocket flaps.

Final Touch

You now have a handmade garter-stitch coat — warm, soft, and simple in its beauty. A coat not just for the body, but for the soul.
