Infants Three Piece Set Free Knitting Pattern

Infant’s Three-Piece Set — Size 6 Months

A classic, cozy three-piece set for infants including a hat, mittens, and bootees. Worked in worsted weight yarn, this set combines garter stitch and stockinette stitch for a soft, stretchy texture, perfect for newborn comfort. The hat features a simple stockinette body with a garter stitch brim, the mittens are shaped with decreases at the tips, and the bootees have a snug fit with a textured sole.

This set can be made in a single color or accented with small details for a personalized gift.


Materials

  • Columbia-Minerva Knitting Worsted (4 oz skein) – 1 skein for entire set
    OR
  • Nantuk Knitting Worsted (2 oz skein) – 2 skeins
  • Knitting Needles: 1 pair, size 8 (Boye)
  • Tapestry Needle: 1 blunt end
  • Gauge: 44 sts = 1″, 6 rows = 1″

Hat

  1. Cast on: 50 sts.
  2. Garter Stitch: Knit every row for 18 rows.
  3. Stockinette Stitch: Work even for 16 rows.
  4. Shaping:
    • Bind off 19 sts at beginning of next row, knit to end.
    • Next row: bind off 19 sts, purl remaining 12 sts.
  5. Work even on these 12 sts for 24 more rows. Bind off.
  6. Finishing: Sew the 19 bound-off stitches on each side to the narrow strip on the wrong side of the hat to form a neat finishing edge.

Neckband

  1. Cast on: 100 sts.
  2. Knit 4 rows, then bind off.
  3. Attach: Sew neckband to neck edge of hat, leaving about 5 inches free at each end to tie.

Mittens (make 2)

  1. Cast on: 24 sts at wrist.
  2. Garter Stitch: Knit 6 rows.
  3. Stockinette Stitch: Work even for 24 rows.
  4. Tip Shaping:
    • Row 1: K1, K2tog; repeat across row.
    • Row 2: Purl.
    • Row 3: K2tog across row.
    • Row 4: Purl.
  5. Break yarn, leaving about 12″ for finishing, and draw through remaining stitches.
  6. Sew seam along each side.

Bootees (make 2)

Sew seam at back and sole.

Cast on: 40 sts.

Stockinette Stitch: Work 4 rows.

Shaping Rows:

Row 5: K16, K2tog, place marker, K4, place marker, K2tog, K16.

Row 6: Purl.

Row 7: Knit to within 2 sts of first marker, K2tog, slip marker, K4, slip marker, K2tog, knit to end.

Row 8: Purl.

Repeat Rows 7 and 8 seven more times → 22 sts remaining.

Work 5 more rows in stockinette stitch.

Garter Stitch: Knit 6 rows. Bind off.
