How to Choose a Sweater Knitting Pattern
The prettiest sweater isn’t necessarily the best sweater for you to knit. Before choosing a pattern, look at four things: skill level, construction, yarn weight and fit.
If This Is Your First Sweater
Look for stockinette, garter stitch or simple ribbing with minimal shaping.
Drop-shoulder sweaters can be particularly approachable because the body construction is generally simpler than a fitted set-in sleeve.
A relaxed fit also gives you a little more room for variation than a closely fitted garment.

Bulky and super bulky sweaters generally require far fewer stitches than sweaters knitted in fingering or sport weight yarn.

Look for DK, sport, fingering or lace-weight designs.

Understanding Sweater Construction
You’ll encounter several different construction methods in the patterns below.
Top-down: Knitting begins around the neckline or shoulders and progresses toward the hem. This can make body and sleeve length easier to customise.
Bottom-up: The body begins at the hem and is worked toward the shoulders. Depending on the design, it may be worked in the round or in separate pieces.
